the city of mithai
Disclaimer: This is not the most riveting piece that was ever written so if you are in a blah mood, don’t read! Also if you are a bong (Bengali) don’t take offence. This is just my take on the city. If you feel that you will most likely take offence then don’t read!If you ever thought that driving in Mumbai was maddening then you definitely have NOT been to Kolkatta! And trust me i know what i am talking about...coz that’s what I used to think too!
This was the first time that I was visiting the ‘city of joy’ (should really be called the city of mithai) and it was a bit of a shocker. The traffic there is maddening (to be said like phoebe)! People have absolutely no driving/traffic sense. Really...Chennai auto drivers are angels at following rules when compared to Kolkatta taxi drivers. They drive over the tram tracks, on the other side of the road and don’t move until the tram is almost upon them. I really pity the tram driver. They can move at a decent speed but because of the unruly taxi drivers...well lets just say if you had to walk you would reach before the tram!!
Another really irritating thing is that half the roads in that city are one-way roads. I mean really you want to go to the next lane you will have to take a tour around the city to get there. Also two-way roads become one-way roads at a particular time and vice versa. Talk about confusing.
One really cute thing about the city however are the cops. They just look too adorable in their uniforms. They haven’t been changed to the khaki ones that the rest of the country wears but white. It’s damn neat!
But enough about bashing the city. i just loved the mithai! Not the mishti dahi however. I just don’t get how people can eat sweet curds! But the rossogolla.....ohhhhh......I’m lovin it! I ate so much mithai (went for a friends wedding – an irani girl marrying a Punjabi boy and the wedding in cal....how totally secular is that?).....anyway ate so much mithai that I kinda feel sick...but it wasn’t my fault...me swears!!!!
There were about 10 of us from the girls side and 350 from the boys.... anyway we had to give them 21 boxes of mithai and vice versa.... now they could finish all that among them themselves...but us? 21 boxes? No fridge! So what do we do.... eat mithai.....lol....
Anyway i went on a tram and a hand cart.... was loads of fun.....and i had nice fish!!! Lots of fish!!! Yummy fish....
So all my BONG friends...eat your hearts out!!! ;)
